A comprehensive “Train the Trainer” programme was prepared by Limerick Institute of Technology (LIT) and a workshop was carried out in Bilbao, Spain for over 15 Trainers.
The two day A2PBEER Train the Trainer Workshop was designed to enable experienced professionals working in the field of retrofitting public buildings to train and upskill a cohort of experts who can deliver the A2PBEER Retrofit Training Workshops within their own countries. The intention is that these trainers will carry out a one day workshop to transfer knowledge on best practice energy efficient and financially viable retrofitting to public buildings using the learnings from the A2PBEER project. It is anticipated that a total of 250-300 individuals involved in the construction industry chain will be trained in energy efficient retrofitting of buildings across Europe.
Train the Trainer Workshop
In September 2016, trainers from a range of backgrounds including architects, engineers, academics, policy officers,building owners and energy management consultants representing a total of nine countries, came to attend a two day workshop at Tecnalia headquarters, Bilbao, Spain. THE AGENDA
To assist the trainers in carrying out the future A2PBEER Training Workshops, LIT provided them with a Training Handbook (in English) which is available to download at A2PBEER training-handbook_final. The workshop was based around the information submitted in the handbook along with suitable pedagogical (andragogical) approaches for the proposed cohort of trainers. To summarise, the workshop included the following topics and the indicative syllabus is available HERE.
Unit 1: Introduction and overview of the A2PBEER technologies and retrofitting project, and instruction on how to use Moodle, the virtual e-learning platform which holds the training material, instructions and a discussion forum.
Unit 2: The technological components of the façade envelope, windows, lighting systems, district thermal networks and absorption technologies are summarised in this pdf: Technologies in Brief
Unit 3: Presentation of four case studies investigating the use of the technologies and how these are implemented and retrofitted to best practice standards. These will be enhanced by the partners´ experiences and reports on best practice. case studies in Leioa University Spain, Maritime Museum Malmo, Vocational School Turkey and Heritage building Croatia.
Unit 4: The A2PBEER Support Guide Toolkit is to assist stakeholders in making best practice decisions on how to improve the energy performance of their public building or district. The Guide outlines the methodology of how to carry out a district and building assessment from the viewpoint of energy consumption. There are six stages to understand and complete. Unit 5: The Financial tool uses a simple excel sheet which focuses on financial analysis, return on investment, cost control and evaluation of rehabilitation of public buildings. It includes data from a case study which is to be completed and understood by the course participants. It also focuses on strategies and opportunities provided by alternative financing mechanisms (ESCOs, EPCs, etc.)
Unit 6: The pedagogical approach develops the knowledge and skills of the trainers to enable the transfer of knowledge to future stakeholders, such that they will be able to effectively deliver A2PBEER training to a variety of stakeholders with respect to a number of different public building types.
The ‘Train the Trainers’ session also included an evaluation process in the form of a feedback questionnaire to asses the process and this will continue until the future training workshops have been competed.
