As part of the project an online Support Guide Toolkit has been designed and developed by ABUD and LIT, to assist building owners and managers in choosing the most appropriate retrofitting strategy within certain financial constraints.
The A2PBEER Support Guide Toolkit is to assist stakeholders in making best practice decisions on how to improve the energy performance of their public building or district. The Guide outlines the methodology of how to carry out a district and building assessment from the viewpoint of energy consumption. There are six stages to understand and complete. All building owners and managers should have an understanding of how the building works and how to improve its efficiency, improve energy savings, reduce CO2 levels, provide comfort for its occupants and simplify its use.
When the building requires a retrofitting strategy, the A2PBEER support guide toolkit is designed to provide basic advice in a simple way. The model below demonstrates the methodology of the toolkit.
A number of relevant areas need to be assessed before a decision can be made to on how to retrofit a building. These include:
- Climatic conditions – topography, wind
- Building characteristics – construction type, age, geometry
- Type of District – morphology and density
- Legislation – EU and National level
- Peoples needs – risk assessment, greatest impact
- Availability of technologies – appropriate choice and financial constraints
The step-by-step methodology starts with the analysis of the target building/district to characterize the current conditions through Key Performance Indicators, which are then compared to benchmark values depending on the climate to identify the relevant technical retrofitting gaps. These determine the technical intervention possibilities feasible for the retrofit.
The legal EU and National requirements should also be considered as these can have significant bearing on how to retrofit the buildings.
Stakeholder analysis is to determine the impact on certain occupants and key holders.
Energy Strategies are investigated to determine the cooling and heating loads and strategies to reduce these levels. The reduction of artificial lighting is also a major factor with the aim to increase daylighting use.
How the energy is used within the building will be investigated taking into consideration financial constraints and a number of technology recommendations will be provided. These will outline the benefits of each technology retrofit with the aim to provide the best practice retrofitting approach for the building. Examples of best practice case studies are also available to view.
